Plenty on the menu at Papa Paul's in Temecula

A reader suggested we check out Papa Paul's Restaurant in Temecula. It was a good tip. Papa Paul's is a friendly neighborhood pizzeria that also does two-egg breakfasts, baked goods and everything in between. Papa Paul's is a transplant from Chino. Co-owner Frank M. Salvo told me in a phone interview that when he acquired the business in the mid-'90s, he retained its menu and its philosophy of good food in generous portions. "We're Italian. It's better to have leftovers than not enough," he said. Story continues below David Bauman / The Press-Enterprise Frank M. Salvo, co-owner of Papa Paul's Restaurant in Temecula, displays his chef's special pizza. That philosophy is evident in Temecula. I came in one weekend and ordered the steak-and-eggs breakfast. I was impressed by the size of the platter and did a double take when the check arrived: $10.18, including a 50-cent cup of coffee. Also noteworthy on the breakfast menu are the omelets, $6.95-$7.95, and French toast made with brioche bread. There are several lunch specials at similar prices. On a separate visit, I had chicken marsala for $8.95. It came with a bigger-than-average house salad topped with grated cheese and several slices of garlic toast. Other specials range from eggplant Parmesan for $6.95 to salmon fillet for $10.95. There's also a full range of sandwiches, from burgers and subs to Reubens and gyros. The standout pizza is the Hot Volcano, $15.99-$19.99. It's topped with jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, pineapple, sausage, pepperoni and Canadian bacon. Appetizers include pepperoni or cheeses on garlic bread, stuffed mushrooms and mozzarella sticks. Story continues below Salvo prepares his chef's special pizza. The décor is pleasantly Mediterranean, with plenty of orange and gold. Papa Paul's is only open for breakfast or lunch, but Salvo said he expects to expand to dinner hours in the fall.
